The department begins its history in 2014, when for the first time in SumDU was licensed educational service in the field of higher education: training of specialists of educational qualification level “Bachelor” in the field of 6.010203 “Human Health”. The first enrollment of students in this specialty was made in 2015.
According to educational regulations, this specialty has twice changed its name. Today the name of the specialty is “Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy”, the field of knowledge is “Health Care”. Therefore, the Department of Physical Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine was first established (Order № 0609 – I of November 1, 2016), and then the name was changed to the Department of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Sports Medicine (Order 0757 – I of October 21, 2019). The department is a graduate of the specialty Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy.

The department staff is also represented by practicing chief physician of the Sumy region Nina Oleynichenko; cosmetologist Victoria Bilous, MD; sports medicine doctor Lyubov Tomin, MD.
The department is a participant in a number of projects, including the international project Erasmus + “Innovative Rehabilitation Education – Implementation of New Master’s Programs in Ukraine” (598938-EPP-1-2018-1-LV-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP).
Logistics of the department is constantly evolving and updated. There are 7 specialized laboratories, the equipment of which fully consistent with the requirements of the National Health Service of Ukraine for rehabilitation.
The department is located on the basis of the University Clinic of Sumy State University, where both educational and scientific work is carried out. Also, leading specialists of the department provide physiotherapy and occupational therapy services to Ukrainian and foreign citizens.
